Osaka Keeps Her Cool in the Bad Homburg Heat – Venus Williams Bows Out After Epic Battle. Naomi Osaka kept her composure in the sweltering Bad Homburg heat and advanced to the round of 16 of the WTA 500 boutique tournament. Resuming a match that had been suspended due to rain the previous evening, the four-time Grand Slam champion completed a 6–4, 6–1 victory over Poland’s Magdalena Frech, dropping just one game on Tuesday.
Osaka, once again dressed in a golden sequined outfit, had arrived in Bad Homburg more than a week ago as one of the first top players in the field, eager to take advantage of the tournament’s outstanding practice conditions. The sixth-seeded Japanese star will return to action on Tuesday (not before 3:30 p.m.) against Belgium’s Elise Mertens, who defeated rising Filipina talent Alexandra Eala 6–3, 6–3. Eala had recently reached the semifinals in Berlin.

Venus Williams, meanwhile, narrowly missed out on a place in the round of 16 despite tremendous support from the crowd on the Spielbank Bad Homburg Centre Court. One of the greatest players of the modern era received a standing ovation after her debut appearance at the Bad Homburg Open powered by Solarwatt. The conclusion of the 2-hour, 57-minute first-round encounter could hardly have been more dramatic. At 6–6 in the deciding-set tiebreak, the five-time Wimbledon champion committed a double fault against Romania’s Irina-Camelia Begu. Moments later, Begu converted her match point.
“It’s never easy to play against a legend like Venus. I had to fight hard, but now I’m happy,” said Begu after her 6–2, 4–6, 7–6 (8–6) victory over the 46-year-old wildcard recipient. Williams thoroughly enjoyed her time in the Kurpark. “The courts here are excellent, it’s simply beautiful,” the former world No. 1 repeatedly emphasized. Next week, the tennis icon will compete in the Wimbledon doubles event alongside her sister Serena Williams.
German Hope Lys and Third Seed Svitolina Begin Their Campaigns
Also exiting the tournament was 2024 Bad Homburg champion Diana Shnaider. The seventh seed was defeated 6–4, 6–4 by Denmark’s Clara Tauson. German hopeful Eva Lys will make her main-draw debut in Bad Homburg on Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. The Hamburg native faces a tough opening challenge against Emma Navarro, currently ranked No. 25 in the WTA rankings. Among the tournament’s top four seeds, Elina Svitolina (WTA No. 8) will be the first to take the court. The two-time Wimbledon semifinalist faces Liudmila Samsonova on Tuesday (not before 5:30 p.m.).
At the Bad Homburg Open powered by Solarwatt, which offers nearly $1.2 million in prize money, Wimbledon champion Iga Swiatek enters the tournament as the top seed, while newly crowned French Open champion Mirra Andreeva is seeded second.
